Peggy Hawkins Newton, 79, of Halifax, died Thursday, May 16, 2013.

Peggy, a native of Halifax County, was the daughter of the late Irvin George and Susie Hawkins Hawkins. She was also preceded in death by two sons, Wayne and Donnie Wrenn.

She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Frank Newton; two sons, Glenn Patrick Hale and his wife, Sharon, of Louisburg, and Darryl Wrenn and his wife, April, of Carson, VA; her sister, Carolyn Hawkins Sledge and her husband, W.C., of Roanoke Rapids; four step-daughters, Norma N. Cook and her husband, Gary L., of Elizabeth City, Helen Diane Vick and her husband, Bill, of Conway, Johnnie Turner of Jackson, and Patricia Taylor and her husband, Billy, of Orlando, FL; her stepson, George Hale and his wife, Lainie, of Gaston; her grandchildren, Jonathan Hale and his wife, Ashley, Heather Hagaman and her husband, Jimmy, Matthew Wrenn, Noema Wrenn, Casey Cook Byrum and her husband, David, Jennifer Cook Simpson and her husband, Josh, Karen Kinyon and her husband, Chris, Ken Wood and his wife, Chris, and Lisa Nowell and her husband, Bill; thirteen great-grandchildren; her niece, Kim Warrick Haywood and her husband, Joe, and her nephew, Greg Sledge and his fiancé, Sonja.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 19, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. in the chapel of Askew Funeral and Cremation Services in Roanoke Rapids with Rev. Jimmy Jarrell officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Marks Episcopal Church cemetery in Halifax.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 1:30 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.
